Following (1998) Dir. Christopher Nolan, United Kingdom.
Director Christopher Nolan became a
household name with his revisioning of the Batman films (Batman Begins, 2006; The Dark Knight, 2008), but long before the Caped Crusader and the recent success of Inception (2010), Nolan’s Memento (2000) reached cult-status and made him a name to watch among film fans.
Whether you’re a recent Nolanist or have watched Memento back-to-front and back again (I’m pretty sure I watched it 3-times through the first time I rented it), you may have missed his first feature film Following (1998).
Following set the stage for Memento with a non-linear plot that doubles, and triples, back on itself. Not convoluted without reason, the structure nicely mirrors the plot as Bill, a young man who follows strangers on the street, is drawn into a complex intrigue by someone who catches Bill in the act of trailing him.
Filmed on a small budget in black-and-white 16mm film stock, Following has a noirish feel while remaining uniquely modern. You won’t see any familiar faces in this 69-minute film, but you won’t want to watch it for star power– you’ll want to watch for the sheer joy of the clever plot and the satisfaction of seeing just how Following laid the groundwork for Nolan’s future successes.

Glossy name: The Believer
Glossy purpose: “The Believer is a monthly magazine where length is no object. There are book reviews that are not necessarily timely, and that are very often very long. There are interviews that are also very long. We will focus on writers and books we like. We will give people and books the benefit of the doubt. The working title of this magazine was The Optimist.”
http://www.believermag.com/about/
You could call The Believer a literary magazine, but that would be giving it short shrift– fiction and poetry are just a small slice of the tasty pie that is The Believer. Inside the gloriously illustrated covers, you’ll find interviews, articles, artwork and features from writers, performers, editors and students. Some pieces come with bylines you might recognize (Amy Sedaris, Nick Hornby, Rick Moody) while others might be up-and-comers or below-the-radars.
Glossy fact: The Believer is brought to you by McSweeney’s, the same people responsible for Timothy McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, the DVD magazine Wholphin, and the 826 Writing and Tutoring Centers.
Glossy friends: It goes without saying, that if you’re a Dave Eggers fan, you’ll like The Believer. Not a fan of Dave Eggers? No matter, there’s something in The Believer for anyone who enjoys reading about literature, culture, politics and art.
Glossy frequency: The Believer is published semi-annually, with 10 issues per year.

–Dictionary of Publishing and Printing
The Library is your go-to place for research when you have a paper to write, for computers when you need to check your email and for coffee when you need some caffeine to make it through the day.
But what about when you have nothing to do at all?
That’s where Your Weekly Glossy comes in, with a browsable periodically-inclined reading suggestion for those times when the computers are full and the view of the Fawell Boulevard parking lot is too boring to contemplate. Grab that cup of coffee, pull a magazine off the shelf and find those dull hours of waiting transformed.
What will you find in Your Weekly Glossy?
Simple. Your Weekly Glossy will introduce you to a new general-interest magazine every week. You’ll find a brief description of the publication and a helpful photo so you can recognize the magazine when you see it on the shelf. Look for Your Weekly Glossy right here on the C.O.D. Library blog.

It’s time to recognize the guys who are doing the hard work to make this project go smoothly. The carpet crew was too dispersed today to get a photo of them all, but I did manage to get a shot of Adam, the leader of the pack. He was busy cutting the curved line that goes down the main hall of the library. It’s detailed work cutting in the curve, but he makes it look easy, and it comes out looking smooth.

Adam from Vortex making the carpet look good
I was also able to gather the crew from Hallett Movers together for a quick pic. They have the Herculean task of moving all the bookshelves, periodicals shelves, reference books, microfilm cabinets, computer tables, study tables, chairs and all other forms of furniture and equipment out for the carpet team and then putting it all back together again. Today they put the periodicals shelves, periodicals tables, and new book area shelves back in place. It’s all coming together!
